I do not believe society is responsible for Mary's death. Bigger may have been scared for his own life, and society may be responsible for that. However, you cannot argue that society caused you to commit murder in court. People are responsible for their own actions. Bigger made a choice to kill someone. His reasons made have been fueled by fear, but he still executed a murder.

Your legal response to this is dead on; however, do people in society have any responsibility to each other? If you bully someone and the victim hits you and hurts you badly, is the bully in any way responsible or is only the victim who hit the bully responsible? What do you think? Let me know--Mrs. Holst
I think that the reason your victim would be punished is he or she raised the conflict to a new level. Your victim made the choice of taking violent actions. Bigger was not in a situation where killing Mary was necessary to protect himself. I think this is what makes him responsible.

Ok, go back to my original question: Do people in society have a responsiblity to each other and if so, what is that responsibility? If people break that responsibility to each other, what can society do to ensure that those responsibilities are not broken?--Mrs.Holst
